本名，长冈正雄，初中毕业后，在父亲的影响下，进入新剧界。很快就热中于舞台表演，与剧作家小山内薰关系亲密。1935年至1971年期间，除了舞台剧表演外，还出演了许多电影作品。当时，大部分演员基本只演自己公司片子，而三岛却从不在乎。因此，他的身影出现在大量影片中，是有着独特存在的黄金配角。
